What Air Filters Do and Why They Matter
Air filters play a major role in keeping your heating and cooling system running efficiently. They trap dust, debris, pet hair, and airborne particles so your equipment can breathe properly and your home stays cleaner and healthier. Most homes use standard disposable filters, but upgraded filtration systems and whole-home air cleaners are available for better indoor air quality.
When to Change Your Air Filter
Standard 1-inch disposable filters should be replaced about every 3 months. Some homes need more frequent changes:
- Families with allergies
- Homes with pets
- Homes with heavy dust or construction debris
- Systems running continuously
Advanced filtration systems last longer and are typically serviced during professional HVAC maintenance.
How to Change Your Air Filter
Locate the Filter
Most filters are found in the return air vent on a wall or ceiling. Some systems place the filter inside the furnace or air handler, behind an access panel.
Remove the Old Filter
Open the return grille or access panel and slide the old filter out. If no filter is present, measure the opening so you know the correct size.
Check the Filter Size
The size is printed on the filter frame. Match this size exactly when buying a replacement.
Install the New Filter
Slide the new filter into place and make sure the airflow arrows point toward the furnace or air handler.
