Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Series 63 and Series 63-X?

The Series 63 is the standard residential steam boiler for Chicago two-flats and three-flats. The Series 63-X is designed for more complex steam systems — multi-zone systems, two-pipe steam systems, and buildings with higher control requirements. Both cover the same capacity range (up to 210,000 BTU) and use the same cast-iron construction.

When do I need the Series PSCII instead of the Series 63?

The Series PSCII covers up to 350,000 BTU and is the choice for larger residential buildings — six-flats, eight-flats, and other buildings with more radiation than the Series 63 can serve. If your building has more than three or four units, the PSCII may be the correct series.

How do I know which series is right for my building?

The correct series is determined by your building's connected radiation load — the total square footage of steam radiators in the building. D's Air & Heating measures the connected radiation at every estimate appointment and selects the correct series and model based on that measurement.

Are all three series available for Chicago buildings?

Yes. D's Air & Heating installs all three Peerless residential steam series in Chicago. We pull the City of Chicago mechanical permit on every installation and handle all inspections.

Chicago's residential steam heating systems are found in virtually every two-flat, three-flat, and six-flat built before 1960. The Peerless Series 63, 63-X, and PSCII are the standard replacements for these buildings. All three use cast-iron sectional construction that integrates directly with existing steam piping — no system modifications required in most cases.
